Remediation along Interstate Highway

SCOPE OF WORK: LSP Services, permitting, assessment, and remedial oversight

Omni Environmental Group was retained by a major transportation company to provide Licensed Site Professional (LSP) services in relation to a release of diesel fuel to soil along the edge of a primary public right of way resulting from a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 90 (I-90).

Due to the location of the release along I-90, Omni Environmental Group submitted an Application for Permit to Access State Highway. Upon receiving necessary permit approval from MassDOT, we coordinated for traffic control and worker safety provisions to be employed during response actions.

Our staff identified the extent of the release through a field assessment program, facilitating preparation of an Immediate Response Action (IRA) Plan detailing the anticipated remedial activities. We pre-characterized impacted soils; gained acceptance from a suitable receiving facility; and prepared necessary documentation to allow for “live-loading," transport, and recycling during excavation.

Omni Environmental Group further represented the Client through numerous communications and attendance at a public hearing with the local conservation commission to review the conditions of the release, assessment findings and anticipated remedial actions, remediation waste management, and restoration.

During the excavation program, we provided field oversight to the environmental contractor, screened soils, directed soil excavation efforts, collected confirmatory soil samples for laboratory analysis, and accurately documented IRA activities and restoration work.

Through detail-oriented preparation, project management, and communications with involved parties, we were able to successfully complete soil excavation, remediation waste management, and restoration efforts over the course of a single day adjacent to a high traffic section of I-90.

The post excavation confirmatory data supported the filing of an IRA Completion and Permanent Solution Statement with No Conditions.
